  • Teen deaths from HIV AIDS have tripled since 2000, cautions new UNICEF study

Teen deaths from HIV AIDS have tripled since 2000, cautions new UNICEF study

HIV AIDS is the number one cause of death among adolescents in Africa and is the second leading cause of death among adolescents in the world. UNICEF released these statistics on Friday and has set alarm bells ringing among the medical community.

According to latest statistics by United Nations children’s agency, the fatality figures in HIV-affected adolescents is not decreasing, and this is a cause of worry.

The number of adolescent deaths from AIDS has tripled in the past 15 years. Each passing hour, 26 new infections are added to an ever increasing number. UNICEF, while releasing this data warned that HIV-positive adolescents must have access to proper treatment, care and support.

Craig McClure, head of UNICEF’s global HIV/AIDS programs said that it is important that HIV-negative persons must be educated so that they remain free from the deadly scourge of the 21st century.

The situation is particularly acute in the Sub-Saharan African countries. The region has the highest prevalence of AIDS in its population. Girls are more affected than boys, accounting for 7 in 10 infections among 15-19 years old.

The statistical update on Children, Adolescents and AIDS reveals less than 50 percent of children less than two months are tested for AIDS.  Of the 2.6 million HIV-positive children, only one in three has access to HIV treatment.

UNICEF data also reveals that majority of the adolescents who succumb to AIDS-related illness acquired the virus when they were infants 10 to 15 years ago. In those times, fewer HIV-positive pregnant women and mothers received antiretroviral medicines to prevent the virus from being transmitted to the newborn. These children became adolescent, sometimes without knowing their HIV status.

The only bright spot in the report is since 2000; nearly 1.3 million new HIV infections were avoided in children, thanks to advances in the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV.

  • Apple to ditch LCD and use OLED display in the iPhone model of 2018

Apple to ditch LCD and use OLED display in the iPhone model of 2018

Apple is in the process of shifting to a new type of display technology from 2018 when it will transcend from LCD to OLED based displays for its iPhone lineup. Since Apple launches its next iteration of iPhone on a yearly basis, in all probability, iPhone 8 will be featuring the OLED display.

It seems that LG will be tasked with producing the OLED display for iPhone edition to be released in 2018. LG is reported to be planning to invest billions of dollars in OLED display production over the next few years. There are plans for a large panel plant in Korea which could produce screens for new iPhones.

The said factory is coming up in Paju, Gyeonggi Province and will take about two years to be completed. It will specialize in large-sized OLED TV panels and flexible OLED panels that will be used in smart watches and car displays. LG is reported to have sunk almost $8.7 billion, and the factory is large enough to accommodate 14 football fields.

OLED displays are better than conventional LCD displays, and LG’s OLED factory investments seem logical considering the news that Apple is going to make the switch to OLED displays for its devices from 2018.

Today Apple Watch uses the OLED, and it is natural that it will soon make the transformation and use the power-efficient OLED technology in its handsets in the coming future.

However, the technology needs further refining. OLED displays have been used by manufacturers in the past. However, there are some creases and wrinkles that need to be smoothened before the technology is accepted by Apple. The brightness, energy-saving features of OLED panels tend to diminish with time. Considering Apple’s fetish for quality and making highly durable devices, LG researchers will have to do a lot of work before OLED displays become viable for future iPhones.

  • A Century since Albert Einstein Proposes his General Theory of Relativity

A Century since Albert Einstein Proposes his General Theory of Relativity

Newton put forth the theory of relativity, and it was accepted without much rancor.  It remained unquestioned till the beginning of this century. It is exactly 100 years ago when Albert Einstein shook the very foundation of physics with his General Theory of Relativity. Einstein’s theory proved that Newton’s Three Laws of motion were only partially correct. It became erroneous as speeds reached the velocity of light. Newton’s Law of Gravitation also was approximately correct and broke down in the presence of strong gravitational force.

Einstein already had carved a niche for himself with a string of accomplishments to his credit. He had proposed the corpuscular theory of light and said that light did not travel in waves but is composed of individual bundles of energy called photons. This explained the phenomenon of Photoelectricity that until now was unexplainable.

Einstein’s groundbreaking theory was soon verified, and this got him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. Having explained the phenomenon of photo electricity with his theory Einstein then published what is now known as the Special Theory Of Relativity. The theory explained many previously unexplained phenomenon such as time dilation, i.e., the slowing down of time as one approaches the speed of light, and the equality of mass and energy, represented by the now-famous equation E = mc2. All his theories were experimentally verified in the coming decades.

The General Relativity theory successfully explained the slight drift in the orbit of Mercury. The prediction that light will seem to bend when passing through the gravitational field of a massive object was experimentally proved during the total solar eclipse on May 29, 1919.  Pictures taken during the period of totality when Earth’s shadow completely covered the sun showed that the apparent locations of the background stars beyond the sun had shifted in the same way as had been predicted by General Relativity. This property of light is used to the phenomenon of gravitational lenses where close by massive objects will bend the light and make them more visible.

What Albert Einstein had discovered was much beyond his time. When he proposed his groundbreaking theory, he was just 26 and had never been to any university. The theory is amazing and the conditions of the times when it was proposed make it even more amazing.

Black Friday 2015 brings great savings, big deals and big offers on wide range of products

Black Friday brings a whole load of incredible bargains, but it will be good to know which offer is on the board and where. Black Friday is just approaching, and bargain hunters across the country and abroad would be hunting for deals and offers.

Year after year this annual shopping bonanza has been a huge hit in the United States. Now consumers pan borders can also avail these discounts more UK retailers get in on the fun and games.

  • Biomarin Pharmaceutical’s Kyndrisa was not enough to convince the FDA of its efficacy

Biomarin Pharmaceutical’s Kyndrisa was not enough to convince the FDA of its efficacy

A drug for treating Duchene Muscular Dystrophy has been deemed unsatisfactory in action by the FDA. Both Parent and patient testimony about the changes they experienced after taking Biomarin Pharmaceutical Inc. Kyndrisa was not enough to convince the FDA advisory committee of its efficacy.

A bench of outside advisors to the regulatory agency United States FDA said that the data from BioMarin Pharma Inc. on its experimental drug for treating a chronic muscle wastage disorder was not enough to pave the way for its approval.

The FDA panel did not vote since 15 out of 17 members were of the opinion that paucity of statistical significance in BioMarin’s late-stage study weakened the findings from two earlier studies. The drug in question is ‘Drisapersen’ which is being developed to treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

DMD affects one in 3,600 newborn boys and leads to a rapid degeneration of muscles. The fate of the drug will be decided on December 27 after the evaluation of the panel’s comments.

Another drugmaker, Sarepta Therapeutics Inc is also developing the DMD treatment eteplirsen whose action is much akin to BroMarin’s drisapersen and skips a faulty section of the gene to produce dystrophin, the lack of which causes DMD. If the FDA goes along with the concerns of the panel, more trials will be required, and it will consume time that patients with DMD don’t have.

Sarepta shares went down 1% at $36.98 after bell while the shares of another company PTC Therapeutics Inc which is also developing a treatment for DMD fell by 5% in after-hours trading to $30. BioMarin’s stock was placed on halt for all of Tuesday.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Michael Yee feels that there is a 50 to 60% chance of approvals. The fact that some patients benefited from the drug and the willingness of the patients to take the risk could turn over the opinion to positive for the drug.

    1. How can you tuck your hair without using a bobby pin?

According to Paul Hanlon from Prabal Gurung, you can easily do this by using the Wella hair spray to keep the hair tucked behind the ears. The hair will stay in place wherever you go or whatever you do.

    1. How do you choose a product that won’t weigh out the strands?

Here’s a tip shared by Peter Gray. When it comes to choosing the best product for your hair, you need to check first if you have thin or thick hair. You need to spray the product in your hands and rub. When it comes out sticky – this is best for thick hair. If it turns to powder – then this product works best with thin hair.

    1. What’s the best contour technique?

There are different answers to this, but expert James Kaliardos does the same technique all through the years. He applies the Nars Dual Intensity Blush on the cheeks using short and quick stroke within the hallow area of the face. This gives the person a natural looking glow.

    1. How do you stick rhinestone and glitter on the face?

If you are not keen on putting glue on your face, Tracy Reese, who is Mary Kay’s lead makeup artist suggests you apply a thick night cream on the face so the sparkle will stick.

    1. How to apply matt makeup?

Setting your makeup should be easy these days. In fact, you don’t have to puff your face full of powder to achieve a matt-look makeup. Diane Kendall from Prabal Gurung uses tissue to take out the oil on the face before applying the powder.

    1. How to use a coffee stirrer to create nail art?

Nail art is becoming everyone’s favorite trend. And if you love coffee, using the stirrer can help you create a nice nail art design. All you have to do is pick up a polish and blow the color onto the nails. This will give you a “splatter” effect – a nice tip shared by Kathy Jane Hughes from Butter London.

  • 14 Years Of Mythbusters Mayhem Ending Next Season

14 Years Of Mythbusters Mayhem Ending Next Season

Millions of people remember when the Mythbusters made an entire cement truck virtually disappear with explosives during an episode of their show. Millions more remember poor Grant testing seasickness cures in a chair designed to produce nausea for what seemed like hours. These episodes, and many more, introduced people to a world of science that they never knew existed. Now, sadly, that journey is coming to an end.

The Mythbusters final season will premiere January 9. The show will continue on its quest to investigate iconic moments in television and movies and urban legends during its final season. During its run, the topics have included everything from Batman’s tools to whether ducks’ quacks echo. The topics of the final episodes have not been revealed, but they are sure to include plenty of explosions, a long time staple of the show.

Hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman have starred in the show since its premiere episode in 2003. Hyneman was actually the one who pitched the idea to Discovery. The M7 Build Team, comprised of Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara (along with several others throughout the years), was introduced in subsequent seasons.

Seth Rogen, James Cameron, Aaron Paul, Vince Gilligan, Sophia Bush have all guest starred on the show, along with many more celebrities. Many of the stars appeared in episodes related to movies they appeared in. Numerous scientists and government officials have also guest starred on the show. President Obama was a guest star back in 2010.

Mythbusters was one of the first shows to harness the power of the internet to increase the popularity of the show. Fans were asked to submit myths online that the show could explore. Fans could also submit issues they had with the testing used to examine the myths, resulting in a number of shows were previous myths were revisited and retested.

Mythbusters is Discovery Channel’s longest-running series. The series has logged 248 episodes, 2950 experiments, 1050 myths, and 900 explosions throughout its run. The series was nominated for an Emmy an astounding seven times. Discovery reported that the Mythbusters library will be moving over to Discovery’s sister network in 2016.

So what is in the future for the Mythbusters? Savage and Hyneman are reportedly involved with a spy drama project in development at CBS based on their personal experience. The duo is reported to be executive producers for the show.

  • New Details Released For Rocky Horror Picture Show Reboot

New Details Released For Rocky Horror Picture Show Reboot

Fox has released new details about its two-hour TV movie remake of the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Fox reports that the remake will be faithful to the text of the original 1973 play by Jim Sharman and Richard O’Brien, but will reimagine the story visually. The reimagined cult classic is being released to coincide with the original film’s 40 year anniversary.

The remake will reportedly be directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega, well-known for his work on High School Musical. Gail Berman and the 1975 film’s producer Lou Adler will serve as Executive Producers alongside Ortega. The two-hour network event from Fox will air next year in the fall. The Rocky Horror Picture Show remake will not be airing live, unlike Fox’s upcoming Grease and NBC’s musical specials.

Fox has also announced the choice of who will play the iconic lead character, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, in the Rocky Horror Picture Show reboot. Dr. Frank-N-Furter is a highly sexualized mad scientist who hails from Transexual, Transylvania. Orange Is The New Black’s Laverne Cox will reportedly be playing the role that Tim Curry originally made famous. Cox will create her own version of the character instead of attempting to recreate Curry’s aggressive, over the top persona.

Today, Cox is Hollywood’s most popular transgender personality since RuPaul. She recently made history as the first openly transgendered person to be nominated for an Emmy award for her portrayal of Sophia Burset on Orange Is The New Black. She has been featured in roles on both The Mindy Project and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, and she is also attached to the current CBS pilot Doubt.

Many Rocky Horror Picture Show fans have reported that they are excited to see their beloved film reimagined. The musical comedy has spawned regular midnight singalong screenings and a Broadway spin off in the 40 years since it was released in theaters. The original story follows sweethearts Janet Weiss and Brad Majors, who stumble upon Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s annual science convention showcasing the birth of ‘Rocky Horror’ — a fit, attractive man created solely to fulfill Frank’s desires. The 1975 original movie quickly became a cult classic, with local art house theaters across the nation screening the film complete with live actors acting out the movie beneath the screen.

  • Plus Size Fashion Getting More Attention From Designers

plus sizePlus size women have long felt ignored by the fashion industry. “Plus” was treated like a dirty word in the fashion world, causing shame and confusion for those who didn’t fit the skinny, tall standard fashion designers kept pushing at us. Few major retailers and boutiques made clothes for plus size consumers and the ones that did hid their plus size offerings in separate sections or basements.

Plus size is commonly considered between sizes 14 and 32, according to data from Plunkett Research. For the stores that stock plus size fashion, the stock is often so minimal that most sizes sell out quickly, making it difficult for customers to find items in their size. Brands like Michael Kors and Gap offer up to about a size 20, but in many cases the clothing in those sizes can only be found online. The perception among many was that designers welcomed plus size customers’ money, but not their presence in stores.

Today, a new trend is emerging with more fashion designers turning their focus to the plus size market. Designers are focusing on plus size fashion that makes the buyer feel good about wearing it. The trend is not surprising as plus size consumers have become the majority. Plus size women now account for 67 percent of the population. The average size of a woman in the western world today is a size 14. In the United States alone, plus size clothing is now a $17.5 billion market.

As plus size fashion becomes more common, more people are flocking to the designers that have embraced the fact that not everyone can be a size 2. There are many people who want to spend their money on plus size fashion but don’t know where to go. Many of the designers that only made clothing for those size 8 and below are finding that they are missing out on a significant portion of the market.

Brands need to stop thinking that everyone who is bigger wants to hide it and start creating plus size fashion that the wearers can be proud of. The “Pink the Runway” fashion show, created by Crystal Carmen and Laura Mazurek and taking place at the Le Meridien Hotel on Oct. 30, features 30 plus size models in styles from local and national designers. There’s also a documentary coming out next year called “Straight/Curve” that questions whether size zero will remain the norm and talks about plus models as pioneers. More dialog about plus size fashion will hopefully encourage more designers to shift their focus to fashion that everyone can wear.
